Firstaway is managed by Helen Hill, ably assisted by Kim Lodge. Tony Birr (our Chief Instructor) and Heather Birr, run the sailing school aspects of the business. Eddie Hill with Ron Flood and Roger Brown, keep the boats in good order. They are all based in our office and class room facility
in Ocean Village Marina, Southampton.
Firstaway is therefore at the
very heart of this rejuvenating yachting centre, where major changes are underway to provide top-notch facilities, including a 15 storey 4 star hotel, with 'stern-to' mooring for superyachts. With good deep water access available at all tides (24/7) most superyachts prefer to stay in this sought
after and expanding location. Ocean Village now has new wine bars and restaurants locally.
The Royal Southampton Yacht Club has excellent food and always welcomes visiting yachters , with Dame Ellen being one of its more famous members.
Ocean Village Marina being centrally placed in The Solent, provides easy access to destinations such as Chichester Harbour in the east to Lymington and Yarmouth in the west. Passage plans can easily accommodate states / directions of the tide and wind to maximise the benefits of sailing in the protected Solent waters. It provides some of the best sailing in the country, if not the World, with a wide range of marinas, harbours, quiet estuaries to explore and some excellent hosteleries to patronise.
We belong to both the MLA (Marine Leisure Association)
and the BMF (British Marine Federation). We have special relationships with Ambition Sailing and the Rig Shop.
